Meghan’s Empties #1: Would I Repurchase?

Hello everyone!

I thought I would give you a quick glimpse into my little empties bucket and tell you how I felt about each of the products that I have recently finished… cause I mean who doesn’t love some empties?

I’m not going to ramble so let’s just get started!

#1. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer for Dark Circles (Yellow shade)

To be very honest this is my probably my third or maybe even fourth now bottle of this concealer. I love it. It’s affordable, its thick, it covers my dark circles, and for me it doesn’t crease. If i’m in a pinch for time I will even put this on most of my face and pass it off as a foundation because it covers so well! I tend to go back and forth between the yellow shade and the salmon shade and I can never quite decide which one is my favourite. Overall if you’re looking for a good concealer that won’t break your bank, this is the one my friends. Definitely will repurchase!

#2. Nivea Double Effect Anti-Perspirant/ Deodorant (Violet Senses Scent)

When I bought this deodorant I was a little nervous because I don’t usually have the best luck with Nivea products. The exception to this is the in shower body lotion, a post/ review on that product can be found here!

After using this I actually really enjoyed it. It smelt amazing, my underarms felt significantly smoother, and I never got that stiff feeling when applying it. It seemed to just go over my skin like butter. As for sweat control I found for my day to day life it held up pretty well.

I have since repurchased a different variation of this deodorant and it was a bit of a fail… a post about this will come soon. As for my recommendation… the purple Violet Senses one worked great, but I think for the product in general i’m going to have to say it’s a no bueno from me.

#3. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Vanilla

This is a cult classic, this concealer is phenomenal. It is brightening, thick, covers every mark on my face, works great under the eyes, and comes in TONS of colours. It’s also very expensive. If you are in a place where you can afford the splurge then I would highly recommend it. I have since repurchased, and I will continue to repurchase in the future!

#4. Maybelline Lash Sensational Full Fan Effect Waterproof Mascara

This is a bit of a tricky review for me because I have two opinions. For the non- waterproof formula of this mascara I have nothing but nice things to say. It is what I use everyday and I adore it. For this waterproof version, I absolutely HATED it. This version of the mascara made my lashes look small and clumpy, it was really hard to put on, and nearly impossible to take off. In order to get this off of my eyelashes I would have to MELT it off with a hot cloth for several minutes before going in with any kind of makeup remover. Like not even Bioderma can get this stuff off people.

If you want to try this mascara (because it’s drugstore and really nice in general) please go with the regular formula, it doesn’t smudge on me at all and it comes off pretty easy at the end of the day. And it makes your lashes look super long (not much on the volume front though) unlike the waterproof one which just turns them into a hot fricking mess. Waterproof= big pass from me.

#5. L’Oreal Infallible Pro- Matte Foundation

I’m not going to ramble on too much here because I have a full review of this product in this post here! In general this foundation did stay super matte, it controlled my oils, and it didn’t feel too heavy on the face. I didn’t like the fact that it oxidized like crazy on me, and it didn’t come in many shades. I found it to look a little cakey but to be fair I never applied it with a sponge (so that could change on application).

I don’t think this foundation is bad, but I don’t think I would repurchase.

#6. Life Brand 3 in 1 Cleansing Cloths for all skin types (Makeup Wipes)

These makeup wipes used to be my holy grail wipes for a long time. I like them because they take a lot of makeup off and they do so pretty easily. The cons for me are the fact that they do sting my eyes a little and they tend to be a little drying. They come in massive packs for not much money, so that’s a huge plus.

Now that I’ve used the Simple Micellar Wipes (post here!) I don’t think I will be repurchasing the Life Brand ones unless I’m in a pinch.

I hope this post helped you a little bit and gave you some insight to my thoughts on some cult classic products, and maybe some new ones as well!

Feel free to leave a comment if you’ve tried these products with your thoughts, I would love to read them. Also leave any suggestions of what you would like to see upcoming on the blog, I’m always open to ideas!

Have a wonderful day or evening and I will talk to you soon!

Fab Or Flop: Luxury Powder Dupe

It’s Emma here again to share with you another experience and my thoughts on a new product in my life. Let me give you a little hint into the future….I love it, and you will too.

MOVING ON. So I recently started baking my under eyes (you know the thing you do with your face but not like a cake because you don’t want to cake your face). You will probably come to learn that my dark circles are one of those top things on the list I like to cover up with makeup, and baking (i.e. using a sponge to apply a sh*t ton of powder and letting it sit before dusting it off) with a translucent powder lightens up the area as well as setting it all in place. If you do this you must rub your finger under your eye because it will never be as soft as it is in that moment.

On with the product, right? Yeah, I know I know. I did my digging and discovered that I absolutely did not want to spend $47 on the Laura Mercier powder. Even the Sephora brand powder was still $20. My dilemma was that I do not have access to the Coty Airspun powder which is what most people recommend. Instead I had to dig even deeper into the internet and wild parts of youtube to find something us Canadians can get our hands on. And I found it. Let me introduce you to the $4.47 NYC Smooth Skin Loose Powder.

This is the answer to my prayers. My logic was that if I am using a significant amount of powder every day I simply cannot break the bank on this kind of product. But under $5 sure. Then I used it. And BAM. I’m in love. I apply more concealer than I need oxygen to try to cover my bad boy circles up and this is the only powder to this day (honestly no lie) that I can last all day without it creasing. I used to get those awful under eye creases as well as the crease of my eyelid because yes I apply concealer there too. Now I just apply to my eyelids and under eye, contour or eat breakfast while waiting, dust it off and move on with my day. I love this stuff. It is FAB. I even use it to set the rest of my face lightly with a fluffy powder brush because I don’t require too much mattifying to keep me going.

Overall, this powder is 100% worth a look the next time you run out. I wish you all the best luck with your week and don’t forget to tune back in for another Fab or Flop because we have lots coming your way. You may be wondering “don’t they have any flops?” Well just you wait….

Until next time I am signing off. xoxo.

February Makeup Haul!

Hi everybody!

I hope you’re doing well and surviving the cold winter months. I am currently home sick wrapped up in bed so I thought I would share with you some of the goodies I have bought recently.

What better remedy for a sore throat than a good old makeup haul… am I right?

I have some bits and bobs from the drugstore and some higher end stuff so I hope you enjoy taking a peek into my new products!

This baby is not a new purchase to me but it is a new tube. This is the Maybelline Lash Sensational Full Fan Effect Mascara in Very Black ($9). This is my favourite mascara that I have tried. It makes my lashes look crazy long without looking too chunky and false. If you like a natural looking lash that still makes a statement then I highly suggest this!

This brow pencil is new to the Drugstore from L’Oreal Paris. It is called the Brow Stylist Definer  ($11) and it is a very good dupe for the cult classic Anastasia Brow Wiz. I have a post about this pencil on the blog already so I won’t bore you with the details. If you want to read more about it then head on over to my brow post, link is below!

This is pretty simple… I needed a hand sanitizer for my purse. I picked up this Endless Weekend Anti-Bacterial Gel ($2) from Bath and Body Works. It smells very fresh and clean, which happen to be my favourite scents apart from florals. It also has a super cute bottle so I mean who can resist?

Oh boy was I excited to get myself another tube of this stuff. I had been looking for my shade (Vanilla) for ages and it was always sold out. This is the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($36). It is quite pricy but there is really nothing like it in my opinion. It covers everything and brightens under the eyes beautifully. When I get lazy I even use it as a make shift foundation to even out my skin tone. It’s wonderful and I love it.

So I went to Sephora in a search for a new foundation and I ended up coming home with this. I am not going to talk too much about it because I want to do a separate post on it later but I am really enjoying it so far. This is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup in the shade Ivory Nude ($45). It is a great colour match for me, it does stay all day and it’s a great matte, full coverage foundation. If you want more details and to see what it looks like on the skin then stay tuned for another foundation post!

I picked up this lipstick in MAC and I am happy to say that i’ve found a new everyday Matte lipstick. This one is a Satin Finish (but it looks pretty matte to me) and it is in the colour Faux ($21). I like this lipstick a lot. It is a beautiful everyday and very wearable colour. It goes well with my pale skin and it is a semi matte finish that does not dry the crap out of my lips. The formula is MAC so it goes without saying that it’s long wearing and beautiful in general so this is a big win for me and a permanent addition to the everyday makeup routine!

So that finishes my little makeup haul. I’m really happy with everything I bought and I hope you enjoyed taking a nosy little peak in my shopping bags.

Let me know in the comments what you want to try from my haul or your opinions on anything that you have tried! Also tell me what you’ve been buying lately and if you think there is anything I need to try!

Lots of love,

meghan. x

Makeup To Defeat Oily Skin

The battle of trying to have a great makeup day while feeling like I could cook a pancake with the amount of oil on my face has been long and to be quite frank, exhausting. It seemed impossible for me to be able to find a makeup look that controlled my oily skin –without looking like a mask.

I have been searching high and low for makeup products that met all of my requirements. These requirements for the products are as follows:

  1. Stay Matte
  2. Be long wearing
  3. Still look like skin
  4. Not cause breakouts to my acne prone skin

After many a trial and error I have finally managed to round up a wonderful team of makeup savers to share with you.

Drumroll please…

First off we have the base, which is also known as our primer. The primer that I have used for almost a year now, and swear by, is the Becca Ever- Matte Poreless Priming Perfector. I purchased this product myself in Sephora for (44$) for 1.35Fl.Oz.

This primer is best applied with your fingers, and it has a gel like consistency. I use a small amount and wipe it all over my face. I let the product dry and sit on my face for around 30 seconds then I continue my foundation routine.

If you are a person who suffers from extremely oily skin this will be your best friend. As soon as the primer is applied you can barely even move your hands over your face. It is so super matte that you will not be able to see oil on your face throughout the whole day. When I wear this primer I have never had to touch up with powder. Another plus to this primer? It doesn’t affect the way the rest of your makeup goes onto the skin. You will barely even notice it’s there- but it will still keep all of your oil in check.

The second step is a good matte foundation. I have tried multiple matte foundations in my time and I think the best one I have found is the L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte 24 Hour Wear Foundation. The foundation can be found in most drug stores and it retails from around (12-16$) for 1.0 Fl.oz. depending on where you are shopping.

I liked this foundation because it did exactly what the label said. It was super matte, and it lasted a long time. I didn’t find that it broke out my skin, it had a pleasant smell and it applied nicely with my buffing brushes and beauty blender.

However, I will say that I did find the foundation didn’t have a lot of shade choices when I made the purchase. The shade I have is too light for me so I almost always have to bronze when applying. Another problem is the oxidization. I found that when I got closer to the end of the product it started to go slightly orange on my face. That being said, I have a very severe red undertone, so it’s possible that it could be my skin poking through, but I did still notice the slight colour change.

To set my foundation I do my third step, which is my holy grail Rimmel London Stay Matte Long Lasting Pressed Powder. This powder comes in six shades, but I personally choose the translucent shade every time I purchase. The powder itself is from the drugstore as well and usually retails from (8-9$) for 0.49 oz.

This powder is fantastic. It helps control your shine, it does not cake up on the face, it keeps my concealer from creasing, and it is very long wearing. At the end of the day, powder is just powder, and there’s not that much to say about it- but I will tell you that this one is fantastic- for not a lot of money.

My last step to control oil is a setting spray. The one that I use is the Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray for Oil Control. This spray is (38$) for 4.0 Fl.oz from Sephora and a few other makeup specific stores. This may seem like a bit of a hefty price tag for something you spray on your face but keep in mind that you do get a lot of product here. I bought this spray over a year and a half ago and I still haven’t even been through half of it!

I like this spray because it is a very fine mist, it doesn’t squirt at your face aggressively. Also, it has a nice smell, it dries quickly, does not ruin your face of makeup, and it keeps your face matte for a very, very long time. When I do my makeup and forget to use the spray I will notice some oil peeking through where I usually woulnd’t, so that must mean something, right?

Another spray that I know a lot of people like is from the L’Oreal Infallible collection, like the foundation mentioned above. I believe it has a much lower price tag as it is a drugstore product but I personally prefer the Urban Decay option for myself.

Using all of these products together has changed my makeup game substantially. I no longer feel like a grease ball just walking around the mall and my foundation stays in place. I have not broken out from any of the products mentioned above and for all of these reasons, I highly recommend them to anyone in the market for some oil control.

I hope this helped my fellow oil sufferers out there, if you have any other suggestions for me please feel free to leave them in the comments for others to see! I will leave some links to the products mentioned below.
